Is my son too short for braces?

August 11th, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr. I have somewhat of a strange question to put to you. My son is 13 years old and our dentist has informed us that he requires braces and referred us to see an orthodontic, however the orthodontist has stated he is too short 4′ 11 and his shoe size is 4. On further discussion they feel straightening the teeth is too early as it will be out of proportion with the rest of his face in later years.
What is your view as we are very confused as our dentist are of the opinion that he requires braces. Thanks for your time and opinion (hopefully).

Could braces withstand my teeth grinding?

August 11th, 2011
Q.

Hello,I have slightly crooked front teeth which I have had attached braces for during my teens to fix. However over time they become crooked again.
I’d like to get Invisalign-do prices begin at around the 3000 mark or can it be cheaper in milder cases? as my teeth aren’t that bad as to need full on braces.

Also I grind my teeth during my sleep and wear a gum shield to protect my teeth during the night. Would I still be able to have Invisalign? Would it stand up to my grinding? as I need a new gum shield every 8 months or so.

My dentist wants to remve enamel before fitting my braces, is this right?

August 10th, 2011
Q.

Hi Doctor, I am a bit confused. My lower arch teeth are a bit crooked. I went to a dentist a few days ago and he proposed to fix them with minimum impact with a Social 6. he said this would involve scraping off a bit of the enamel of my teeth to provide for extra room for the teeth to move back into position.
I felt comfortable with the the dentist, and I was quite pleased the treatment did not imply removing my wisdom teeth, but after doing some research it seems like fixing the front 6 teeth (as apposed to the whole arch) and, above all, scraping the enamel off my teeth is not the best thing to be done. What do you think?

Do I need a tooth removed before braces?

August 10th, 2011
Q.

Please could you tell what to do when you have a canine tooth in this case my right, that has grown on top of or at least slightly overlapping the teeth surrounding it. My mouth is small and as my wisdom teeth have emerged all my previously straight teeth bottom and top are becoming more uneven. I would like to have braces perhaps but don’t know if I would need some teeth removed before straightening could start. I would also like to have some whitening done but not sure if it is best to wait until the other problems are sorted first. I have never shown my teeth in a photograph and try not to laugh or smile as i feel it looks bad. If you have any advice i would be grateful.

Which brace is best for my crooked teeth?

August 10th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have been looking at braces on the internet for the past couple of weeks and I think that I prefer the look of either the six month smile or the invisalign. my teeth are only slightly crooked but I’d need top and bottom braces . Any chance that you could advise me on which one is best and the average costs? Iam 24 and got all 4 wisdom teeth through if this changes anything, it’s greatly appreciated you having time to read this

Would it be possible for me to get lingual braces on NHS?

August 10th, 2011
Q.

Hello,

I’m 15 and my orthodontist is planning on fitting me with braces. The problem with my teeth is that on my top row, I have 1 baby tooth remaining (due for extraction) without an adult tooth above it ready. He is planning on closing the gap left by this tooth and some other minor gaps, and sorting out the overcrowding on my bottom teeth which cause me discomfort. However I’m really uncomfortable about having fixed braces and I don’t know if he will allow me to have lingual braces fitted on the NHS (I can’t pay for private). I don’t know how I should go about asking for them, I don’t even know if it’s possible to have them. I just really don’t like the idea of visible fixed braces, especially for my 16th, prom, and probably 17th and 18th as well.

Why is my face thinner after braces?

August 4th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr. Qureshi, Iam a  twenty four year old male and I’av been wearing braces for just over a year now and people keep commenting asking whether I’av lost weight as my face has thinned out, but I haven’t lost anything, I asked my dentist but he said that only jaw surgery can make you face any thinner. I wanted a fuller wider smile not a thinner face, is it my braces causing this or could there be something else causing it? thansk for your time and hope you can assist.
