What options do I have to fix a gummy smile?

January 26th, 2012
Q.

Hello Mr Thorne. I need your advice on smiles. I have a really gummy smile and have had enough of this. I have looked online for potential solutions and have consistently seen botox used to resolve the issue. the thing is and correct me if i’m wrong but I thought this was more short term with several coursses needed?? regardless off this is wasn’t planning on having botox. I was wondering if there is a brace/orthodontic treatment I can have to help? I would prefer this as it seems like more of a permanent solution. I’d be greatful for any return on this, thank you 🙂

Is there any way to have porcelain veneers and pay for them later?

January 23rd, 2012
Q.

I have hated my teeth since I was very little. When I was younger, my dentist said my mouth was too small to accommodate all my adult teeth and I had about 8 removed. Since then I have continually (due to cost) just kept getting my teeth removed if I have a problem as the thought of having silver fillings or the cost of other treatments have meant I have to keep having them out. I now have a mouth of squint teeth in bad condition because of this and I’m only 27. I did have an appointment to find out about getting at least a brace and I was told this would cost in the region of £5000 and half of this would have to be paid upfront then monthly instalments there after. I would in all honesty , chop off my arm to have beautiful teeth as this has been my hang up since I was a young child. Recently, I got married and I tried my hardest not to smile showing my teeth, but as it was such a happy occasion and the photographer kept asking me to smile with my teeth, I can’t bring myself to look at my photos. I have a terrible credit history due to a previous relationship where my ex left to to pay for everything as when we split up, he stopped working to all the creditors chased me. I’m not looking for a sympathy vote, just to ask if you know of anyway I can have veneers done on my top teeth without having to pay a huge deposit or use a credit reference agency. Do you know of any dentists who will let me pay them up for the treatment before I actually get it so they know I am an honest person, just stuck in a horrible dilemma? Hoping you can answer some of my questions. Many thanks

Can I have braces to move my teeth, even though I have a bridge?

January 16th, 2012
Q.

Dear experts, hello I am 21 and my teeth are in a pretty bad shape due to lack of treamtnet and general looking after them over the last few years. I have lots of fillings in my back teeth and have some bridge work at the front of my mouth as my eye teeth never grew. I would just like to know If I could have braces despite the filling work and the bridges, and is there a particular brace i cannot ave as a result? also would I need further cosmetic treatment to improve my smile thats available full stop, as I would like to be able to smile and laugh without being conscious of my bad teeth. Many thanks

Would I have to wear fixed braces to close such a small gap?

January 11th, 2012
Q.

I have two small gaps in my top teeth, one of which is between my two front teeth. Both gaps are only approximatly 1/8 of an inch wide. I’ve had braces in the past, but I believe the gaps are a result of my negligence in wearing my retainer. I would like to close the gaps without having to wear braces on more, especially for such a small flaw. What course of action would you recommend?  I had train tracks the first time, would I have to have train track braces again or are there other braces I could try? Thank you

What is the best brace to correct my two front teeth?

January 11th, 2012
Q.

Hello there im trying to work out which type of braces would be the best for me so i can take a step towards finaly being confident enough to smile! My two front teeth on the top stick out and have a gap between them. In the past iv had 2 sets of braces, that was 6/7 years ago. The first was a retainer which seemed to make the gap bigger but i was told this would be fixed with the second brace. I always thought it would be a fixed brace but when it came to gettin it, i found it impossible to wear. It was a retainer on the top with a big chunk of plasic that fit over my bottom teeth. I couldnt wear it so gave up. Now im older i would like to be happy with my smile and any advice would help me out alot. Thanks

Should I have baby teeth removed and get implants or have braces?

January 4th, 2012
Q.

Hi, When I was a teenager, my canines grew over the top of my baby teeth. In an ill-advised decision, I had the adult canines removed. 10 years on, i am trying to decide on the best option to fix this problem as the baby teeth are going to fall out eventually. Either way i have decided to get orthodontics to straighten my teeth as top and bottom are crooked. I have seen three orthodontists. They said i basically have 2 options. 1: remove the baby teeth and get implants or 2: remove the baby teeth and move the molars around to close the gap. I think I would prefer option 2 as it is the cheaper and appears to be better in the long term. My question is if it is possible to expect a normal looking smile by pulling the molars around and can the 1st molar be shaped to resemble a canine? Do you have any recommendations on which option might be preferable?

I want to have braces but think I may not be able to?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

HI ADAM 🙂 I want braces but Ive been having problems with my teeth which I assume will prevent me from having them. Recently for the past month or so i have been having a tingly feeling and some times a zapping feeling in my two front teeth. Mainly rhe right one. Yesterday i was looking at my teeth with a pen torch, and noticed i have two, virtical lines running down, from the gums to near the bottom of my tooth. i have been reading about hairline fractures and various other fractures in teeth, and wondered if you could tell me what it could be and what could be done to treat this if it was a hairline fracture. the issue, as i mentioned earlier is that teeth are slightly crooked and I was hoping to have them straightened out but not if that will be at the expense of the teeth themselves. thankyou

December 14th, 2011
Q.

My son who is now15 years old has protruding teeth and difficulty in closing the mouth perfectly because of this ,The local doctor advised him to go for orthodontic treatment seeing his case . After making the mold and photos he advised to extract 2 premolars each from upper and lower jaw . Was x ray not needed to confirm , which teeth is to be removed or it can be decided just from the mold and photographs ?

I have had a bad experience with metal braces, but I now need braces again, so I have other options?

December 9th, 2011
Q.

I have already had a nasty scrap with metal braces in my younger days and I don’t particularly want a repeat performance. I had the metal ones and they were never at an point fun! But now it looks like one of my front teeth has decided to go on a wayward journey and I would like to know if it would have to be braces to fix this? Especially, would it have to be metal braces? I am happy to listen to your advice on this matter if you can please. Regards.

Would getting braces for my overlapping teeth make my teeth grinding any worse?

December 6th, 2011
Q.

Hello Adam, I have been told by my dentist that a tingly feeling in my gums is due to the fact that i grind my teeth in the night. this in turn has caused the teeth to have some mobility and as such he has given me a gum shield type thing to wear when I sleep. I was wondering though because i have pondered about having braces to fix my overlapped teeth for some time, would this affect the chances of me getting one? i thought about it and thought it could either be good as the braces could move the teeth with less resistance or bad as it could just make matters worse. what would you say? and will my teeth regain retention or will they always be wobbly?
