Can you explain how lingual braces work and what is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

December 20th, 2011
Q.

Hi. I want a brace and am thinking about getting lingual brace. I began to do some research into them when I stumbled across the incognito ones which I think are pretty cool and look good as well as being the linguals I was thinking about getting. I was toying then between the incognitos and the tooth coloured brace but the lingual seems more for me and I can see how these two sets work so It makes more sense for e to do this. If I decide to have this done where do I go. I mean it wont be my dentist and all my friends have a dentist- then an orthodontist for any of their brace work. I know that an orthodontist is someone who specialises in tooth straightening and so on but what is the difference between an orthodontist and a specialist like yourself? and can you tell me a little bit about the incognito’s, I want the treatment to be as good as it can be despite the effort i am nervous! cheers

What kind of treatment should I expect for overlapping teeth?

December 12th, 2011
Q.

Hi Ian I thought Id ask you this as you are a specialist. I need braces and am not bothered which set I end up with really although if its possible I would like to avoid train track braces (if not I’m not bothered but it would be nice to do so). the problem I have is tha my lower teeth are much more overlapped than my upper teeth which are only mildly crossed, the thing is if i leave them longer the top teeth will just become more overlapped so I decided to take action quickly. what I want to know is whether the fact that the to arches are clearly at varying degrees of overlapping would be a problem. will i end up with the top brace being taken off and keeping the botom one on for longer or what? cheers Dr

How do Lingual braces actually work?

December 12th, 2011
Q.

Can you tell me how the lingual braces are actually attached to the teeth and if you wouldn’t mind I would like some detail on this. This is the part of the treatment that really scares me. I don’t mind the thought of wearing braces for a long time as long as I’m getting what I pay for but I’m not all that comfortable with hands routing around my mouth and all the wires and any pain. Please tell me if till be all good!

I want fixed braces but am worried than my diabetes will affect my treatment.

December 9th, 2011
Q.

hello Mr Hutchinson, I am in a bit of bother over getting braces. I have decided to not go with the Inman or Invisalign or anything I think full fixed braces- though disgusting will work better , all the time and I have seen first hand people who have had them and the results they have obtained with them. the only issue i have is that i have had for as long as i can remember type 2 diabetes. I haven’t got gum disease and all my teeth are in rude health, I have had an oral cancer screening to make sure I didn’t have that (leaving no stone unturned) as I know that your mouth has to be in the best condition it can be in before having a brace. I just wanted to know if diabetes could affect the chances of me getting a brace- and whether or not there is anything I should know if not. what are your thoughts? thanks for this

How long approxiamely will i have to keep my mouth stretched open for because my appointment is forty minutes long and i dont ant to keep my mouth open for that long? Will i be able to have the colour bands put onto my braces when i first get them or will it have to be at my second appointment?

Is Invisalign the best option for straightening two rows of crooked teeth, or are there other options?

December 8th, 2011
Q.

hi
My little brother needs braces of some but he really doesn’t like them. Ive been telling him he can get some smart ones like the ones that go behind your teeth and so on. he’s seen the invisalign treatment and is really really wanting to get it. I am however a bit apprehensive, there are a lot of people who hated their braces who I know but none regretted getting them. I have tried to tell him this. could you please advise us on Invisalign and crooked teeth, the thing is both of his teeth rows are crooked- the bottom more than the the top, can you even have two lots of Invisalign at once? also what would you recommend (if not Invisalign) for him to have? he wont listen to me lol!! thanks Dr,

Should I have a brace before getting lumineers?

November 9th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have had three lumineers after I chipped three the three teeth in question after a rather nasty accident at work. these ahppen to be on the same row of teeth thats started to overlap. I dont know why I thought that at the age of 32 my teeth/facial features as well as my self has stopped growing, this doesn’t appear to be the case. one theory I have is that they were never flat (that’s actually the case) in that they over lapped but to a point that no-one would notice and now thay have just slipped and all of them have began to over lap slightly the issue I have got is that one of the lumineers has cracked and broken off right in the bottom corner – I think as a result of the teeth moving as they have. so firstly this needs replacing and I don’t know if this is possible. but I would want to do that ideally after Id had a brace of some form to straighten them out. I have money from my claim the first time round left so that’s not an issue, do you thin that I could have a brace on these lumineers and is it possible to then have one removed/replaced? cheers

Is the Inman Aligner the best option for my tooth crowding

November 9th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I want to have braces but I feel the may cost to much. I am forty and a single dad I have been told that If I want anything other than traditional braces it will get quite expensive, i have a little bit of money stashed up like but i wanted to know how much alternatives will cost, I’m in Dudley just outside Birmingham so I do manage to avoid London. I don’t want my kids seeing their old man with train track braces, you know what kids are like though if they saw an inman it’s be cool or whatever, I only have mild lower tooth crowding I just feel now is the time to do it, financially and whilst I’m still at this age no older. how much on average would you say an inman aligner would cost? what are the alternatives and (sorry) are there any dentist in Birmingham or nearby that you would recommend for this type of treatment? cheers

Would I be better going to a private clinic or an NHS dentist for a brace?

November 8th, 2011
Q.

Hi there Dr Hutchinson I have used this site and been on your personal site through this several times. I previously asked you a question about another issue I had with braces and found your information very helpful …so I’m back, hope you don’t mind 😀 I am twenty-one and my HC1 certificate has just expired but I don’t think this would’ve actually helped me in terms of paying/not paying for braces anyway. Naturally like a tool I now decide to have braces- but purely because this is the best time for me to do so, I have been thinking though would it be better to have braces fitted at a NHS dentist regardless of the fact that I will have to pay or better to go to a private clinic to receive treatment? would there be much difference in terms of quality of the final outcome treatments involved and the cost of having the treatment done in the first place? what would you recommend and what would you look at in terms of clinics when trying to choose one? thanks
