My little girls teeth are very spaced, can she have braces at the age of 5?

Q.
Hello Dr Patel. My little girl of 5 has extremely spaced teeth. All of them are very gappy. I’ve always taken care of her teeth, with regular check-ups etc. I spoke to our family dentist who said she was too young for braces as her milk teeth are still there…which i understand. However, don’t braces change the bite and the alignment? not just ‘straighten’ the actual teeth? I’m worried for her. I don’t want her to get bullied. What should I do? We’re with an NHS dentist but I will happily move private if there’s something to be done. I had problems with my teeth as a young girl and was picked on, I just don’t want the same for her. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your question. I really would not worry as orthodontics at this age is usually too young. Hang in there and rest assured that things will improve and if they don’t, orthodontics will sort it out later. I hope this eases your concerns, regards.
