Can I be sedated while having my braces fitted?

December 2nd, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Maini, I guess I am classed as a nervous patient In that I cannot stand the dentists and have not been able to since being young I have been told its called dental phobia and that I’m one f many which is nice! anyway I am nineteen as as such will have to pay for my own braces regardless of what I have done. I was wondering whether it would be at all possible to have braces put under sedation or something like this is there anything that runs along side fitting braces in order to make it suit a dental phobia patient. secondly to this what brace requires the least maintenance- ie. the least trips to the dentist for adjustments when considering closing gapped teeth? thanks

I have an overbite, how effective and discreet are Lingual braces for this condition?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

Hi. I have a slight open-bite, genetic, and also I was a thumb sucker when I was very little, and wore a brace when I was a young teenager. I also have slight over-crowding in my top and bottom teeth which I would really like tidying up, and am in my 40s.
What do you suggest, and can you help? I like the look of the lingual orthodontic as it seems much more discreet. Do you offer 3D pictures to give me an idea as to what my teeth could look like?

Is it normal to have a wire fixed to the back of your teeth after orthodontic treatment?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

My daughter has braces that are due to come off. We are full paying not NHS. My daughter’s orthodontist has said that when her braces are removed he is going to fix a wire behiend her teeth, not noticable, however we are told she has to keep it for the next 10/15 years. We were not informed about this at the start. My daughter has a lot of friends that have previously had braces and none of them have the wire behind their teeth. Is the wire normal? Is it a cheaper option?

What are the most discreet braces available today?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

Hello ADam. I have heard good things about Harley Streets work and as such wasted no time in contacting you when I learned you were part of this team. I am thinking about getting a brace but want it to be as discreet as possible. based on your knowledge in this field and experience what would you say is the best/most discreet brace. I’m not bothered about speed so long as my teeth are straight and as few people as possible can tell orthodontic treatment is taking place in the interim, I work in an office and regularly called out for meetings and presentations so discretion is key for me. Any information you can give would be of massivle help. I live not far away in whitechapel so getting across wouldn’t be an issue but I am a little nervous with dental suits so the best think for me to do is to be clued up first. then come when its necessary. thank

What is the best and fastest treatment for the closure of tooth gaps?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

/hi Sharon. I have looked at your Walpole Website and can see that the treatments you provide have really worked and it all looks really good. I have always said that dentistry is like anything else and that Im willing to travel for quality. I am in Southampton so it would only take me sort of an hour/hour and a half. I wanted to ask your opinion on gapped teeth. I finish Uni next year but am having some time off before going for a job. I was wondering how long it takes to close gapped teeth with a brace? I know thats very vague but I have small gaps of approx 2/3mm between my teeth but only the top row. the bottom are fine. in closing gaps would it be quicker or slower than overlapped teeth and what treatments would you recommend as the quickest?

I want Social 6 braces, but am suffering from toothache, is this likely to affect my brace treatment?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

Hi Anoop I have struggled now for a while with terrible toothache. the dentist put a white filling or something in which has since fallen out. no idea what it was. anyway that tooth has been giving me bother for about 2/3 months aching like it has. I don’t know what’s up with it but I want a brace and am worried that this blumming thing is going to hinder the implementation of one. I don’t know what I should do with the tooth. its my third from back on the bottom right hand side of my jaw. what would you recommend in this senario. If I have the social six treatment (as this i believe is all thats necessary with the overlapped teeth being at the front between the canines) this would surely be unaffected and any necessary treatment can be carried out? what are your thoughts DR, Thank you very much

I failed to wear my retainer after brace treatment and now it doesn’t fit. What should I do?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

HI there,
I had braces for two years and wore my retainer for 4 months after then stupidly didn’t wear it, last night I went to put it on and it fitted fine on the bottom but the top one wouldnt go on, i tried all night to get it on and it did start to go on, I was just wondering if its bad to force it or whether i should continue trying to get it back on?
I suck my thumb at night, not conciously but I wake up with my thumb in my mouth, would i be able to get anything else done, how much would a new retainer cost for the top to keep them in the position they are in now? I had the braces on the NHS. thanks.

I have poor oral health, but I am soon to have braces, what can I use to stop tooth decay?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Im about to have braces but im worried that my oral health is literally just about good enough and not enough to compensate for the obvious dip its about to take when braces are applied. I am going to get everything i can available to clean my teeth with but in a meantime is there anything i can do in terms of concentrating my cleaning habbits to boost my mouths health? and when I get braces is there any particular good way to clean in and around them because otherwise its going to take me like 1 million gozillion minutes to clean my whole mouth. ive always been critical about my oral hygiene it just slipped last year as i moved away for work experince. i will both appreciate and use any information that you can send my way, all the best.

My daughter’s teeth have moved after her retainer was tightened incorrectly, what can she do?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

My daughter has had extensive orthodontic work as a child to straigthen and move her top front teeth. Following this she was fitted with a back of teeth fixed brace. This has been fine until recently when it slackened. She has visited the denitist (not the one who had done the work but same practice) and he tightened it. It appears he has tightened it too much and her teeth have shifted leaving a mm gap between her teethy. This has really upset her she has body image issues and I think in part this has been a dental error. my daughter is employed on a 0 hour contact so work isn’t regular and she only gets mimium wage please can you suggest a way forward
