I’m thinking about having Invisalign treatment but I smoke, will this be a problem?

June 29th, 2012
Q.

Hey Anoop, I have a question – I’m thinking about having Invisalign treatment soon. There is a problem that I know is my own fault, I smoke around 30 cigarettes a day, I have done for years and I really struggle to cut down. Just wondering will my smoking have an effect on the brace or if my teeth and gums will be more susceptible to rotting or disease? Are you able to take the brace out every time I smoke, Or will this slow my treatment down quite a bit? Is there another option that i can go with that will be better for me or does it not make a massive difference? I know smoking is bad for my mouth in general but just wanted to know if i was putting my teeth and gums at more risk with a brace?

I want fixed braces but am worried than my diabetes will affect my treatment.

Q.

hello Mr Hutchinson, I am in a bit of bother over getting braces. I have decided to not go with the Inman or Invisalign or anything I think full fixed braces- though disgusting will work better , all the time and I have seen first hand people who have had them and the results they have obtained with them. the only issue i have is that i have had for as long as i can remember type 2 diabetes. I haven’t got gum disease and all my teeth are in rude health, I have had an oral cancer screening to make sure I didn’t have that (leaving no stone unturned) as I know that your mouth has to be in the best condition it can be in before having a brace. I just wanted to know if diabetes could affect the chances of me getting a brace- and whether or not there is anything I should know if not. what are your thoughts? thanks for this

My over-the-top dentist says I have the start of gum disease. Wouldn’t braces make it worse?

Q.

hello, my dentist said i have the start of gum disease but hasnt done anything about it, they dont bleed when i brush or floss only sometimes like when im ill or when im due on my period, im also on the contreceptive pill which could also be why i have red gums. Also I have always had quite dark gums since being in primary school im 18 now. Well im due at the othodontist next week and was wondering wouldnt having braces make it worse? They didnt suspect any gum disease when they checked my mouth, im just very worried. My dentist sometimes is a little over the top
