Can I just get my top teeth straightened?

January 8th, 2013
Q.

Hello, I do wonder if you can help, for years I have wanted a straight smile and now being 19 and going into the performing industry I really need my teeth straightening, however I have a small overbite and the last time I tried to go for a brace was when I was 14 and they gave me this metal palette upper and lower to move my jaw in place before I had the train tracks, but at 14, I couldnt speak with this brace in my mouth it was horrible and i never ended up proceeding the treatment, I was wondering if i was to have a brace, could I possibly not move my jaw and just get my top teeth straightened? I’m a student, and worried about fees too so I need to keep it cost effecient but still i need to straighten them. Would be excellent to hear back from you, and your advice + suggestions. Thankyou very much , Demi Jay

My teeth are very crowded, will invisalign be as effective as a metal brace?

July 16th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr,   Do you think invisalign treatment is as effective as a metal brace? I do think that invisalign look like the better option being clear and all, but i wouldn’t want to give in to invisible treatment if the brace wasn’t going to do the job properly! I hate my teeth, which are all very crowded and incredibly ugly looking and i just want to be able to smile properly for once, without half attemptimg to drag my hand up to my face. I think having a good smile would make such a difference to my appearance and I would be incredibly grateful for any informaiton you can give me on the matter

thanks

I have had a bad experience with metal braces, but I now need braces again, so I have other options?

December 9th, 2011
Q.

I have already had a nasty scrap with metal braces in my younger days and I don’t particularly want a repeat performance. I had the metal ones and they were never at an point fun! But now it looks like one of my front teeth has decided to go on a wayward journey and I would like to know if it would have to be braces to fix this? Especially, would it have to be metal braces? I am happy to listen to your advice on this matter if you can please. Regards.

If I break my braces how far will it put me back in terms of treatment time?

November 2nd, 2011
Q.

HEllo, I’m a full brace wearer top an bottom- old train tracks. I have a question regarding the course of treatment involved with braces. If I damage my braces how far can it put me back?for example if, as I am on an approximate 18-10 month course of treatment, if I damage the braces and have to go to the dentist and have them fixed how long could it set me back? I was told that this could be the case when I had them and have been warned on my two adjustment appointments since then as well, but If for example I snap a wire then I don’t see how I could loose a lot of treatment time other than that spent waiting to have it fixed and indeed having it fixed? please could you help advise me’?? thanks

How can I stop my brace rubbing as after a year my braces still rub and give me ulcers?

October 12th, 2011
Q.

I wear braces and have done so for about a year now. when i first had them put in i was warned the usual things you know theres gona be a slight speaking issue, teeth will feel weird, dribbled a lot all these things haha, anyway the one that i hold reservations about is whereby I was told that they may give me ulcers because they will rub- these i was told will go as my mouth gets used to them. they haven’t gone and we’re a year down the line with about a year/year and a half to go. they are quite painful when i catch things on them. i want to know why they could possible still be there and how i get rid of them? even its not a case of getting rid of them immediately just stopping the rubbing then letting them heal that would be great, have you any advice that could help? thanks very much.

Which mouthwash is best to use with fixed braces or should I just stop using it?

October 7th, 2011
Q.

I have a full rack of traintracks but in terms of cleaning I have been told that mouthwash will kill all the bacteria in my mouth including good bacterial and that doing so will actually aid bad bacteria’s growth as there will be nothing to stop it? I can see how that could be true, but is it really? the thing is I want to know how to clean my teeth as effectively as I can, thats why I started using mouthwash on the basis that it can get everywhere where i cant. If this is the case is it the case with all mouthwash’s’.
before all this I was recommeded by my dentist to corsodyl mouthwash (with chlorhexidine) but my secondary concern about this is that apparently it can thin teeth when used alone ie. not after washing- even though the bottle says leave 30 mins at least until using after brushing? should i just stay away from mouthwash or is it actually ok?

Is it only metal braces available on the NHS? How long would treatment time be?

October 3rd, 2011
Q.

I am trying to get braces for my child he needs them, he is currently 15 and had crossed teeth which are pretty bad, ive looked at your case studies on this website and was impressed with the way the teenage boys have turned out (the third case study on there) as my boy is in a similar point right now i wanted to know how long they would take to get to that point of being straight when they are overlapped and the gum line is uneven my son does not have an overlap/bite. what braces can i get that would sort this out are available on the NHS or is it just the traditional braces that are? i know you cannot be exactly sure but an estimate of how long it would take also would be amazing thank you

I am having braces on the NHS but i dont know which exactly, what am I having done?

September 14th, 2011
Q.

Hi I am 14yrs old and at the end of the month I am getting some sort of brace fitted on the NHS however I am unsure what type its going to be. All that I have been told it that its like a metal plate that goes under my mouth, and it will make space for when i get my fixed braces(train tracks) put on. please do you think you could give me some information on what to actually expect and what exactly is being done to me? thanks for your time

Whats the cheapest I can get braces for?

July 29th, 2011
Q.

Hi,

I am 30 and finally in a position where I can afford to have my teeth fixed. I do not qualify for NHS treatment as it is cosmetic reasons, with crowding on my bottom jaw and large gaps due to missing teeth on my top jaw.

I am going to get several quotes over the next month, but don’t want to get ripped off.

As a ball park figure, what would be the cheapest cost I could get for braces on both upper and lower teeth to fix this. I appreciate that any crowns/bridges etc may be an extra cost on top of this.

I am worried about the result and cost, but am not worried what the braces look like while on as long as they work.

Thanks
