I am concerned about the brace removal process, will it hurt? Also do you recommend a fixed or removable retainer?

Dear Dr Patel, I currently have six months smile braces on and they are due for removal in a few weeks. I am just concerned about the removal process will this hurt? are they pliered / pulled off? will it damage my teeth or leave marks. Also do you recommend a fixed retainer or a removable one? with a fixed retainer is it still ok and easy to floss? will there be any initial movement ? Thank you for your help.

Is it normal to have a wire fixed to the back of your teeth after orthodontic treatment?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

My daughter has braces that are due to come off. We are full paying not NHS. My daughter’s orthodontist has said that when her braces are removed he is going to fix a wire behiend her teeth, not noticable, however we are told she has to keep it for the next 10/15 years. We were not informed about this at the start. My daughter has a lot of friends that have previously had braces and none of them have the wire behind their teeth. Is the wire normal? Is it a cheaper option?

My daughter’s teeth have moved after her retainer was tightened incorrectly, what can she do?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

My daughter has had extensive orthodontic work as a child to straigthen and move her top front teeth. Following this she was fitted with a back of teeth fixed brace. This has been fine until recently when it slackened. She has visited the denitist (not the one who had done the work but same practice) and he tightened it. It appears he has tightened it too much and her teeth have shifted leaving a mm gap between her teethy. This has really upset her she has body image issues and I think in part this has been a dental error. my daughter is employed on a 0 hour contact so work isn’t regular and she only gets mimium wage please can you suggest a way forward

Can I have a fixed retainer instead of a removable one?

November 9th, 2011
Q.

Dr, I have finished my brace treatment am on my second type of retainer. I used to have the removable ones but I hated them, they were like braces for life only I had to manage them, when I had my bracesfitted I was un aware of the retainer business afterwards andeven when told I wasnt bothered but the actual application of them used to wind me up. anyway I consulter my dentist about this and he said I could have a wire on the back of my teeth, why did they even bother taking my braces off? could you tell me about this wire thing im not sure I would like a mini brace stuck to the inside of my teeth, is it there then for the rest of my life also or would i be able to take it out after a particular duration? I know this sounds as though I’m an unhappy man but that’s not the case, I am really happy with the results of my brace, the dentist had it all to do when sorting my teeth out and managed it its just that I didn’t like the whole retainer issue afterwards, cheers

Why do I have to wear a retainer and how long would I have to wear it for?

November 2nd, 2011
Q.

hey, OK I have had a brace for nearly two years now, I’m bothered about this as I can see my teeth are nearly done which is nice, I know I will then need to have a retainer after the brace as my dentist has told me. what I don’t understand is why I need a retainer? If my teeth have been moved back to their proper/current position then why would they relapse back into a place that’s no right just to be awkward. I’ve has these braces for a while as the brace had to improve my bite as well as my crooked teeth. surely my mouth will not return to having a bad bite as well? also how long will I have to wear to retainer for I don’t want to have to have it all my life you see? cuold you please advise me on retainers, I would really appreciate to know more about them and where I stand with them, thanks

Can I get braces again?

July 21st, 2011
Q.

Hi, I’m 17 years of old and I just feel the need to have braces again to straightened my teeth back to how they were after my other brace.. I had them first at 11/12, I only had to wear them for 6 months and then had to wear a retainer for the remainder of the next 6 months. My teeth have, gone rather crooked from not wearing the brace as much was required. But is there any chance I can get my teeth done again, and this time permanently? But is there by any chance I can get an invisible brace, that I read on a website I came across earlier this evening? Whats the chance on getting this done on the NHS also?
