How long do patients have to wear retainers after braces?

November 16th, 2011
Q.

my grandson has just been given braces and- ive no doubt this is his fault for not listening properly 🙂 but he is now worried stiff about having to wear a retainer afterwards, i never knew this myself and as such haven’t been able to advise him, how long will he be advised to wear the retainer he thinks he will have to wear it all his life! ive assured him this is not the case to calm him but im not sure myself- bit cruel on my part if he does now! also for further reassurance will the retainer exude as much pressure as the brace as hes moaned his brace felling tight- I thought it would ease off/or he’d get used it either way. please could you advise on how long patients usually have to wear braces and retainers more importantly for? thank you

Can I have a fixed retainer instead of a removable one?

November 9th, 2011
Q.

Dr, I have finished my brace treatment am on my second type of retainer. I used to have the removable ones but I hated them, they were like braces for life only I had to manage them, when I had my bracesfitted I was un aware of the retainer business afterwards andeven when told I wasnt bothered but the actual application of them used to wind me up. anyway I consulter my dentist about this and he said I could have a wire on the back of my teeth, why did they even bother taking my braces off? could you tell me about this wire thing im not sure I would like a mini brace stuck to the inside of my teeth, is it there then for the rest of my life also or would i be able to take it out after a particular duration? I know this sounds as though I’m an unhappy man but that’s not the case, I am really happy with the results of my brace, the dentist had it all to do when sorting my teeth out and managed it its just that I didn’t like the whole retainer issue afterwards, cheers

October 27th, 2011
Q.

Hi Iam wondering if you can help me Iam considering getting the six month smile brace as my front teeth are starting to cross due to not being told to wear my retainer as a child. Iam slightly concerned what it looks like on as iam assuming its barley visible but there are hardly any pictures on line, suggesting it may look awful on? also I read a post on an american website that it stains really easily and goes yellow!! is this true?. Thank you for you help.

I have suffered a light relapse that is probably my fault is there anything I can do to close the gap?

October 13th, 2011
Q.

Hi,
I am 18 years old and I had a brace around 3 years ago. I didn’t like having it and admittedly I didn’t wear my retainer as often as I should have – though my orthodontist told me I only needed to wear it at night. I now have a gap in the front teeth, which is the only thing that bothers me, but is there any way I can get it sorted? What are my options? Would I have to pay for the treatment, and how much does it cost? Are there any other options that do not include having a fixed brace?
Thanks very much,

I moved from US to the UK and have not continued my braces treatment. Can I just get them removed?

September 21st, 2011
Q.

Hello:

I have had my braces on for several years. This is unfortunate and causes me great distress and anxiety. They were initially placed while i was living in the US and have since moved to the UK to live with my partner. It is frustrating to find anyone that can help. I would really like to have them removed at this point, because I have not continued with my treatment. Can you suggest how I can go about doing this with a sensitive understanding orthodontist who will not judge or criticize my situation harshly?

My nan’s husband has alzheimer’s and has lost my braces. Can i get a new pair on NHS?

September 21st, 2011
Q.

Hello,
When i was 14 i had braces on the NHS. I Am Now 16. When my braces were removed i was given a retainer to wear. I wore the retainer as instructed to.
Although one weekend i went to stay at my nans house with her and her husband (who suffers from alzheimer’s). After taking my retainers out i cleaned them in the bathroom sink and put them on the side while i went and got some food.
When i came back up the stairs, my retainers were gone.
I Asked my nan if she had moved them and straight away she knew that her husband would have moved them as he was the only one upstairs at the time.
We asked him but he could not remember where he put them, and denied ever taking them.
I was wondering would i be able to get Braces again on the NHS as now, i am unable to bite down into food to tear it and my teeth are worse than they was when i was 14!
I am also extremely self concious about my teeth and it has made me unsociable and i feel uncomfortable talking to people face to face when they are able to see my teeth.
Please Help?

September 21st, 2011
Q.

Hi im 35 and when i was younger i had braces, but i was never given retainers to keep my teeth straight. now im older my top teeth are really forward and i hate them. My question is am i to old to get braces and what braces would you recomment as i would ike invisalign braces. Also im quite scared in getting braces because of my age and ive had bad experiences of the dentist and have had bad gum disease in which ive now been treated for after finding a good dentist. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Can invisalign fix my gap teeth having never had previous treatment?

September 21st, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have a gap in my top front teeth of approx 2 mm and smaller gaps in my bottom teeth. I have been offered treatment by my dentist using the Invisalign lite system. Is this treatment appropriate for such gaps or would full Invisalign treatment be preferable? I am 43 years old and have had no previous treatment. Also would I require a retainer after treatment and would this involve something attached to the back of my teeth or would I be able to wear a retainer at night for example.
Thanks

What’s better for me – fixed or removable braces?

August 24th, 2011
Q.

Hi, Iam hoping that you can help, Iam 23years old and only recently decided to have my open bite corrected. gone to different dentists but they all differ in recommendations…some say temporary braces(retainers?)will work for me…others say permanent ones are better. i also subconsciously thrust/suck my tongue. think that is what caused my teeth to grow that way. what option should i go for? And will a habit breaker at my age help me stop the tongue thrusting?
