My braces feel like they’re going to rip my face off, is that normal?

October 27th, 2011
Q.

hello Tif, I had braces put on last week and In feel like they are going to pull my face off- teeth first! I have been told that I would feel some pressure and that they would take some getting used to but to be honest they haven’t given me much of a lisp or an any other issue, they do rub a bit on the inside of my lips and cheeks which I think is going to sting when it starts to have an effect. but for now the main issueis with the pressure being applied to my teeth if this keeps up they will be where they must in days but ill wont! could you tell me if they should be like this and how long if they are the pressure applied to teeth lasts? surely it cannot be the whole 18 month course of treatment? I thank you in advance for any feedback that may help.

What effects does a brace have on your facial features?

October 27th, 2011
Q.

hi, Dr Hutchinson can you please tell me the effects that a brace has on the patients face please? this may sound weird indeed I know but still. I have had my braces of for about a week now and people have mentioned that I look a bit gaunt? I have always been really slim- never properly skinny but my face has always been really defined so to speak, now though- and I have noticed it myself but hadn’t paid it too much attention as I was happy to have my brace off but my face does seem slimmer? it might not be anything to do with the braces but I have never changed my diet and after checking it seems I haven’t lost any weight, so it lead me to believe it was down to this,? could you potentially shed some light on the situation please. tah

…by the way I cannot leave my teeth alone!

What’s the best tooth correction system if I want to go travelling?

October 12th, 2011
Q.

If I have a brace fitted will I still be able to go on holiday. my question is more how long is it between having alterations made to the brace to tighten alter them or however it goes? I was planning on going travelling around Asia for 2/3 months now I have braces im wondering If that is still possible or whether I will just have to go a t a later date? what I was thinking is that If I can get Invisalign treatment although it is a fair bit more expensive, could I get a couple of retainers at once then bang them in every so often as required as this would then not stop me from travelling or having my teeth sorted out. if this is not the best option as im sensing its not being as I think its so simple which usually means thats not the case, what alternatives do I have as in which Is the quickest brace to sort out crooked teeth and which had the longest intervals between adjustments?

What is AcceleDent, how does it work and is it for me?

October 7th, 2011
Q.

I weant to know which treatment is best to sort out a misaligned bite? I was looking at your profile and at the article highlighting the vibrating mouth guard type device that re-aligns teeth. It says that this procedure is up to 30% quicker than braces and that the lady in the article’s incisor was back in place within her twelve months. this sounds like a good treatment to me 🙂 my two front teeth have crossed and I didn’t want to commit to having braces for only two teeth so I was looking at other treatments. Is this treatment very specific to symptoms or do i sound like I qualify for it? also how much would it cost compared to a brace or alternative. if its not for me what are the alternatives that do a similar job that you would recommend?

I am booked in to have my braces removed but I’m not sure my teeth are ready?

October 5th, 2011
Q.

I am booked in for the removal of my fixed appliances. I hd a number of teeth removed from the top and know that some gaps are inevitable. There still seems to be a gap between teeth at the front. I have had bands on and the dentist adjusted wires etc on last visit and booked me in for removal. Just worried they might not be coming off. Would my orthodontist require me to have further treatment or go ahead with the removal?

If i have to have a brace so be it, but what are the alternatives?

September 21st, 2011
Q.

Hello i’m 17 and I think I may have an issue with my front lower teeth, firstly I was wondering whether there should be any play in teeth, in terms, of wobbling/mobility because gums and bone are not quite metal and concrete I assumed there would be, if this is the case there should be no issue they just seemed to be wobbly and having never noticed it before I thought there may be an issue. However I was just wondering because my teeth are becoming crowded and I may need a brace to pull them apart? I don’t particularly want a brace however if its necessary i’m not fussed, I would like to know what the best alternates are for potentially crowded teeth? Thanks for taking the time out to read this.

I moved from US to the UK and have not continued my braces treatment. Can I just get them removed?

September 21st, 2011
Q.

Hello:

I have had my braces on for several years. This is unfortunate and causes me great distress and anxiety. They were initially placed while i was living in the US and have since moved to the UK to live with my partner. It is frustrating to find anyone that can help. I would really like to have them removed at this point, because I have not continued with my treatment. Can you suggest how I can go about doing this with a sensitive understanding orthodontist who will not judge or criticize my situation harshly?

My teeth have began to move after I had brace treatment. Can I get treatment on NHS?

September 21st, 2011
Q.

I have a question regarding my situation.
I was fitted dental braces (traditional wired braces) through the NHS 6-7 years ago, and at the time I was 11-12 years old. I had 2 upper pre-molar teeth removed from each side. After having braces for 2 years, the braces were removed. I was instructed to keep wearing the “clear plastic braces” for 1 year regularly. In fact, I carried on wearing the clear plastic braces for 2-3 more years (to the point the ends started cracking and breaking off). I stopped wearing them, and now, around 2-3 years on, I am worried because my upper teeth are spreading out severely, causing a gap between my front two teeth. My teeth seem to be in worse alignment than they were before the treatment. When I put on the clear plastic braces now, my teeth and my gums hurt so much I cannot bear the pain. I have told my dentist this problem a few years ago, and he made me some new clear plastic braces which do not work as the moulds were taken of my teeth when they were already spreading. I am now 18, and I am wondering whether there are any ways of me receiving treatment (i.e. get braces) through the NHS? Thank you for your time in considering my question, I would appreciate it if you could answer my question.
