What are the most discreet braces available today?

November 30th, 2011
Q.

Hello ADam. I have heard good things about Harley Streets work and as such wasted no time in contacting you when I learned you were part of this team. I am thinking about getting a brace but want it to be as discreet as possible. based on your knowledge in this field and experience what would you say is the best/most discreet brace. I’m not bothered about speed so long as my teeth are straight and as few people as possible can tell orthodontic treatment is taking place in the interim, I work in an office and regularly called out for meetings and presentations so discretion is key for me. Any information you can give would be of massivle help. I live not far away in whitechapel so getting across wouldn’t be an issue but I am a little nervous with dental suits so the best think for me to do is to be clued up first. then come when its necessary. thank

I am looking to get Damon braces, but need some advice on the cost, can you help?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Hi ADAM. I live in Maidstone so just outside London, I have always tried to stear clear of London when having any type of treatments be it a doctors for treatment, dentist- check ups, filling, hygienist and now orthodontists for braces for the simple reason that London is more expensive than anywhere in England for anything. the problem is- and this is probably why, is that all the top quality places (for anything) are based in London like yourself at Harley street. I need braces to close gaps in my teeth and am fancying the Damon brace as I’ve heard good things. what are your thoughts on the Damon brace and how much would it cost inside London (typically) to outside London, ish/difference. and would it be worth going into London and paying or do you think it would make no difference. Im left pondering my next move, thank you

I have a crack across my front tooth and am afraid that my braces make it worse, what can I do?

November 11th, 2011
Q.

Adam Thorne; I am experiencing a bit of trouble with my braces. I have traditional braces. I have a crack which goes across the corner of one of my front top teeth, im worried this will in time break, Im trying to prevent this from doing so. the issue I then have is that if it does break of and i am certain this is imminent what can I do to protect the pulp in the middle? otherwise my tooth will sting every time I breathe in? is there a temporary solution whilst I wear my brace that’s different to that of a solution if I didn’t? ie. can it be bodged until i have my brace off? once its off what options do I have to fix the chipped tooth?

I have crooked teeth, what would be the best brace to straighten them?

November 9th, 2011
Q.

Hi Adam, I have been looking at your photo’s on the smile guide on here and a really impressed with one particular shot where you have fixed some slightly crooked teeth and made a perfect line all the way around the arch (photo fifth from bottom/seventh from top). I was really impressed with this my teeth are not to dis-similar. I have a couple of rogue teeth that just poke out as they do and have been thinking about having them done. I have always thought that they are actually OK nobody’s ever commented on my teeth so I just thought it wasn’t worth the treatment but I had the though about braces, came on here then saw that picture imparticular amongst others and decided that was it if that is possible I want it done, for mildly crooked teeth how long would it take to have them straightened it surely wouldn’t need the whole 2yr treatment would it? if you know the picture I’m referring to (its a lower jaw) then could you remember how long that took? if not no worries I’m just looking for an idea as to what I’m looking at. thanks

What treatment should I seek for my gapped and protruding teeth?

November 8th, 2011
Q.

HI Dr THORNE. I have issues with y teeth and don’t know whether or not braces would be able to sort them out? the two front top teeth are gapped and have beeb for as long as I can remember the dentist had hoped that they would close when I grew as a child but they never did. the two teeth either side however seem to start protruding from the gum at their own line higher than that of the rest of my gum line, they are no use in terms of chewing die to the position they keep. by and large the rest of my teeth are fine and sound but these four will require I think extensive work to make them comply so to speak. what would be your course of action at this point to give me some idea as to what mine should be from now.

Why do I have to wear a retainer and how long would I have to wear it for?

November 2nd, 2011
Q.

hey, OK I have had a brace for nearly two years now, I’m bothered about this as I can see my teeth are nearly done which is nice, I know I will then need to have a retainer after the brace as my dentist has told me. what I don’t understand is why I need a retainer? If my teeth have been moved back to their proper/current position then why would they relapse back into a place that’s no right just to be awkward. I’ve has these braces for a while as the brace had to improve my bite as well as my crooked teeth. surely my mouth will not return to having a bad bite as well? also how long will I have to wear to retainer for I don’t want to have to have it all my life you see? cuold you please advise me on retainers, I would really appreciate to know more about them and where I stand with them, thanks

I have large protruding teeth at the front of my mouth with a crack, would I be suitable for braces?

October 27th, 2011
Q.

Hi Doc,
I’m 24 and my four front upper teeth are big and protruding forward that when i close my mouth you can slightly see the two front teeth,i mostly avoid taking pictures while smiling since my teeth are big and facing outside, the worst thing i have a big gap between the two front teeth and are stained brown since i was young, of which i dont know the reason for the stain since am the only one in my family with stained two front teeth out of four children.
The two upper front teeth are so sensitive to cold drinks and i detect a crack across one teeth..so my fear is,is it possible i have the straightening braces without my cracked tooth falling down…and if yes for how long will i have them.
Thanks,i will appreciate your help.

I’m bored of eating the same foods, are there any foods you can recommend for a person with braces?

October 27th, 2011
Q.

hello, I hate my braces, not the look of them necessarily just the sheer discomfort. I accept that when I have them off my teeth will be better looking than ever, so im not miffed in anyway about that I had the choice of having them. however could you please advise me on a few foods to eat please I’ve been very limited on my new diet primarily to porridges and yoghurt’s as well as soups. I have only had them on probably just over two weeks now and am fed up of the foods I’m eating. the dentist told me a whole host of foods not to eat but not ones I could- and I didn’t think to ask! also how long will I have to wait before this subsides? any help you could give me would surely improve my quality of life right now. thanks for your time Dr Thorne

Why aren’t my braces off after two years of treatment?

October 27th, 2011
Q.

I Have fixed orthadontics systems fitted to both rows of my teeth. I am absolutely hate them and have for the duration of my treatment, I will live though because I know its all about the end result and im happy to wait it out to see this. the problem is that When I had my initial assesment before the braces were actually fitted I was told that my treatment time was predicted to be around 20-24 months to close gaps in my gap teeth. We’ve just passed 24 months and the teeth have not yet closed I wanted to ask you If You knew how long it should take for traditional braces to close a consistent gap of initially about 2mm Id say in the treatment time I’d say its just about halved that gap- which in theory leads me into another two years of braces which isn’t happening no matter what the end result? what are your thought on this situation please I fell like the dentist isn’t taking me seriously.
